Under the direction of the Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC), the Pharmacist is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient execution of pharmacy operations within a regulated mail-order and specialty pharmacy environment.

 

This role ensures full adherence to federal and state regulations, manufacturer program requirements (including REMS), and internal quality systems, while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety, clinical appropriateness, and documentation integrity.

 

The Pharmacist serves as a key contributor to quality assurance, regulatory readiness, and cross-functional coordination with internal teams, prescribers, and external partners.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities

  1. Clinical & Patient Care
  • Perform prospective drug utilization review (DUR) to assess clinical appropriateness, drug interactions and contraindications.
  • Provide patient counseling in accordance with federal and state regulations
  • Communicate effectively with prescribers and care teams regarding therapy optimization and patient needs
  • Ensure patient safety across all dispensing and clinical activities

 

  1. Regulatory & Compliance Ownership
  • Maintain full compliance with State Boards of Pharmacy, federal regulations (e.g., FDA, DEA, HIPAA), and Manufacturer-specific program requirements (e.g., REMS)
  • Ensure all activities meet audit-ready documentation standards
  • Identify, escalate, and support resolution of compliance risks or deviations

 

  1. REMS & Manufacturer Program Execution
  • Execute workflows in alignment with REMS program requirements, including patient eligibility verification, required counseling and documentation, and data reporting and system documentation
  • Coordinate with HUBs, manufacturers, and internal teams to ensure program adherence
  • Maintain strict compliance with drug-specific restrictions and distribution requirements

 

  1. Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement
  • Actively participate in Quality Management activities, including, QA/QC reviews, CAPA investigations and implementation, and deviation identification and reporting
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety, workflow efficiency, and regulatory compliance
  • Ensure all documentation is complete, accurate, and inspection-ready

 

  1. Operational Execution (Mail Order / Specialty)
  • Verify prescription orders for accuracy and completeness
  • Ensure proper documentation of dispensing activities, patient interactions, and clinical interventions
  • Support fulfillment workflows including shipment verification requirements, address validation (as applicable), and program-specific distribution rules
  • Collaborate with pharmacy technicians and support staff to maintain workflow efficiency

 

  1. Communication & Collaboration
  • Serve as a clinical and operational resource to pharmacy staff
  • Communicate effectively with prescribers, case managers, and internal teams (QA, Compliance, Operations)
  • Escalate patient concerns, errors, or risks appropriately

 

  1. Professional Development & Accountability
  • Maintain active, unrestricted pharmacist licensure
  • Complete all required continuing education (CE)
  • Participate in ongoing training related to REMS programs, regulatory updates, and internal SOPs and systems
  • Demonstrate accountability, professionalism, and sound clinical judgment

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) preferred (Bachelor’s acceptable)
  • Experience in:
    • Mail Order, Specialty, or Managed Care Pharmacy
    • REMS programs or manufacturer-supported therapies (preferred)

 

Licensure

  • Active Pharmacist license in Arizona (required)
  • Multi-state licensure (preferred) (Key states: CA, NC, KY)
